These rum cakes have been a tradition for many years in our family. The recipe originated from our Grandma Ethel Myers.

Grandma was born back in 1903 in Sawyer, MI. She married as a young woman and raised three beautiful daughters; Evelyn, Mary, and Martha. Grandma had many talents including gardening her perennial flowers, sewing for the family, and creating the best home cooked meals.

Holidays were always a special time at the Myers’ home. As the families grew, the number of people attending holiday dinners began to outgrow the table. At one point, shifts of people had to be assigned so that everyone would have a place at the table. Grandma Myers always created a memorable meal followed by a memorable dessert. The Rum Cakes were something everyone looked forward to. The Myers’ daughters loved it so much, that they pleaded with their Mother to make one just for them that they could share in the back room.

The Myers’ daughters soon married and raised their own families. Ethel became the proud grandmother of 7 grand children. Her grandson Brian Neiman married Heidi Mastin in 1986. Heidi and Grandma Myers became instant friends and shared many passions. At one holiday dinner, Heidi asked Grandma Myers if she could have the secret rum cake recipe. Grandma kept her treasured recipes in an old chocolate box. She gladly shared the recipe with Heidi with one rule, "this recipe could be passed from one kitchen to another with the implicit promise to be true".
As Heidi and Brian established their own family, the recipe became a tradition in their home. Heidi still uses the same quality ingredients like creamy butter, pure sweet sugar and fresh eggs, topped with choice nuts and the finest aged golden rum. The flavors have grown to include the Original Golden Classic, Lemon Poppy Seed, and Chocolate Walnut. Any new flavor must undergo the rigorous taste testing of the Myers’ family.

Although Grandma Myers isn’t with us anymore, she is a part of our daily lives. She lived to be 94 years old and passed away in 1997. We will always remember her. These cakes are a tribute to her. Enjoy!.
